Drawing for adults is a unique form of art therapy that improves brain function, promotes concentration, and relieves anxiety. Many adults are discouraged by the idea that creativity requires talent, a significant amount of time, and expensive materials and tools. Drawing is accessible to everyone, and beginner artists do not need to invest a significant amount of money.

Tools and materials

The choice of materials depends directly on the technique you plan to learn. There is a huge selection of materials available, but to start with, you only need to buy what you will need first.

Basic materials:

  • The first tool for a beginner artist is regular pencils. They vary in hardness and are marked with the letters T (H on imported models) and M (B). The softer the pencil, the darker and richer the line will be.
  • For drawing with ink, you will need feathers. This is a rather difficult technique, as it is impossible to correct a drawing if you make a mistake.
  • Charcoal is used for drawing thin and thick lines, hatching, and shading.
  • Colored pencils are convenient and durable, requiring no special care or storage conditions. They are used as an auxiliary material when working with other paints. Modern colored pencils retain their brightness for decades, and many artists use them as their primary material.
  • Pastels are soft crayons or pencils without a frame. Hard pastels are good for depicting fine and small details, while soft pastels are good for shading and creating backgrounds.
  • Watercolor is a difficult technique, but it is the only way to achieve lightness and airiness in your composition. It is important to choose the right materials. Paints come in several types: hard, soft, and liquid. Our art school offers watercolor painting courses in small groups. You can join us even if you have never painted before!

Most of the world’s masterpieces of painting were created with oil paints. To start with, buy a few small tubes of sketch paints, as a full professional set is expensive. The finished drawing looks impressive and is not affected by time.

  • Markers are a favorite children’s option for artistic creativity. They leave a bright, rich drawing, and a dried-out marker can be restored with alcohol.
  • Sanguine is a soft pencil made from clay, pigment, and a binding agent.
  • Gouache is a water-soluble paint that produces a dense, matte color.
  • Acrylic is a water-dispersion paint that combines the lightness of gouache with the density of oil paint.

Depending on the painting technique, a beginner artist will need an easel or sketchbook, palettes, brushes, erasers, paper, or canvas. The most common material for a beginner artist is paper. Canvas must be purchased if you plan to do oil painting. For painting with gouache or watercolors, you will need special paper with absorbent properties.
