Led by Guest Speakers Paz Begue, Jessica Wilson, and Omar Alvarez Titeres, this conversation is a continuation of a Kindling Kitchen Table at Showcase 2020, and the ongoing global discourse throughout our sector. This virtual round table will focus on the impact of international touring on the climate crisis and the intersectionalities of race, nationality, gender, ability, and access to economic resources as we cross cultures and consider climate action. As a sector we place high value on the experiences of children, and have developed sophisticated networks across the globe as a means to enrich our artistic processes and outputs, and ensure that a diverse range of voices are able to contribute. But it is this very audience of children who will live to experience the real impacts of the CO2 we create in our work.

As artists and arts workers facing a devastating health crisis in addition to environmental degradation, we can no longer conduct our work as 'business as usual’. With no renewable alternative to flying on the horizon, and given the current state of our world, the reality of the personal impact of travel has recently shifted the conversation in our sector. We must now ask ourselves what our role will be within such a paradigm shift, as we consider our individual perspectives and cultural backgrounds. Faced with collapsing power schemes, what position are we, as artists, willing to take? How will we contribute to more caring, sustainable and equitable practices?

The goal of this virtual gathering is to transform these ideals into tangible, concrete action steps that artists, festivals and cultural organizers can commit to within this new reality.
