Entering its 3rd year of exploration, SPARK is an opportunity to engage in a creative conversation and to explore professional work for young audiences within a specific geographic context.

SPARK 2016 will explore the Canadian Identity of work created for young audiences. SPARK will provide an opportunity to hear from and network with Canadian creators – playwrights, directors, choreographers and network leaders.

Canada prides itself at home and abroad as having a national identity made up as a cultural mosaic rather than a cultural melting pot. SPARK 2016 explores this idea of a mosaic of work being created for young audiences across a diverse range of disciplines and artists.

A panel of six diverse artists from across Canada (3 Anglophones and 3 Francophones, representing a diverse cross section of creation, genres and positions) will present from their own unique perspective on what is exciting or inspiring about work being created in Canada specifically for young audiences. Following these brief presentations, the artists will respond to questions that are relevant to the idea of a cultural mosaic:

·      What themes or topics are being explored through performing arts for young audiences that are exciting, innovative or relate to celebrating a cultural mosaic?

·      What issues are artists talking about?

·      In what ways are artists responding to the needs of today’s young audiences?

·      How are topics or issues explored by Canadian artists with a national dialogue?

There will be a Question and Answer period followed by an opportunity to engage in open dialogue using the kitchen table forum* with a conversation focusing on creativity and process (versus marketing opportunities).

Part presentation from artists and part international community dialogue, SPARK 2016 is the perfect platform for International presenters to connect with, build and develop relationships with representatives of the Canadian artistic landscape in dance, theatre, puppetry, music and circus. Participants will gain insight into the forces working within the creation, production and presentation of performing arts for young audiences in Canada.
