Mara McEwin
Mara McEwin is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Treehouse Shakers, a non-profit dance and theater company in NYC. She has written, directed and sometimes acted in all of Treehouse Shakers’ twelve original dance-plays; five of which are currently on tour for young audiences. Besides being a creative partner, Mara oversees fiscal development, manages the performing company, eight-member board and residency programs. In 1999 Mara created Niñopalooza, an all day rock concert for kids at the Bowery Ballroom, and Niño Nada, a summer festival of children’s theatrical work that was acclaimed by the New York Times. 

Awarded "Best Storyteller of New York" by the NY Press, Mara has been a storyteller in residence, working in public schools and preschools and leading staff development workshops for teachers. In 2002 she developed Brooklyn Kindergarten Society’s pre-school storytelling program for students ages two to five. Mara was the subject for the qualitative study on the inclusion of a storytelling curriculum in the classroom by Dr. Barb O’Neill. 

Some of Mara’s favorite acting credits include; Bloomsday on Broadway, featured on NPR with Alec Baldwin and Stephen Colbert, and The Sandpiper at Symphony Space. Mara is an adjunct faculty member for the English department at Dowling College, an affiliate of New York Writers Coalition, and has served on the Storytelling Center of NYC’s Board. She holds a B.F.A in theater from Stephens College in Columbia, MO.
