Douglas Irvine

IPAY Board Member At Large and 2013 Selection Committee Member

Douglas Irvine is the Artistic Director of Visible Fictions. He has been directing, adapting, designing and creating work for the company since 1991 with productions touring across Scotland, England, Ireland, Denmark, Germany, the USA, Canada and Australia. He led the Company to be the first Scottish theatre company to perform on Broadway with 'The Red Balloon' and more recently his work has been presented at the Sydney Opera House. He has collaborated internationally with the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, the Seattle Children's Theatre and with the Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis. His productions of 'Jason and the Argonauts' and 'Zorro' have toured the USA and Canada extensively and his production of 'Shopping for Shoes' won the Victor Award at IPAY in 2010 and is still in the company's repertoire.

His work regularly brings other art forms into a theatrical context. His adaptation of 'Monster', mixed action with live and recorded video, likewise his adaptation of 'Peter Pan' integrated shadow art with actors. 'Prince Unleashed' was a radio and theatre cross-over piece with BBC Scotland for BBC Radio 4 whilst other productions have incorporated puppetry, foley artistry, animation and dance. He has created large-scale out door work with fire and water - 'Cargo' (Iron Oxide and Edinburgh Mela co-production) and site-responsive intimate work - 'Curse of the Demeter' on Glasgow's Tall Ship. Recently he adapted Philip Pullman's novella 'Clockwork' into a music theatre piece with puppets and paper cinema techniques which was co-produced between Visible Fictions and Scotland's national opera company, Scottish Opera.

Douglas has been a Director on the Board of the Federation of Scottish Theatre and currently is a trustee of Puppet Animation Scotland, sits on the Management Group of the Scottish Drama Training Network and has recently joined the Board of IPAY.
